Master Planning | Planning places people love. Brent Thompson Architects is world-renowned master planning studio, with a résumé of projects from retail centers to complete cities. Yet how is this background relevant to an owner that wants to build a single family home or a small commercial center?

Extremely relevant, because of the approach we bring. We believe that every project is important. We believe that every project should be carefully and thoughtfully planned from the outset. We don’t just start drawing, or copy and paste from our last project.

Our planning process focuses on achieving three distinct goals:

  • The BIG IDEA. The concept, the single defining characteristic. Is your home a retreat? A place to raise a family? A show piece? Is your retail center a simple convenience center, or a regional destination? If it is a retreat, the Big Idea will make sure that, for you, it is a retreat like no other. The Big Idea is the essence of your project – the road map for every subsequent decision.
  • The EXPERIENCE. Who will be using the house or facility? What are the experiences they hope to enjoy, the memories they expect to make?
  • The STRATEGY. Whether we are building you a place to raise your family or a project to increase the wealth of you and your investors, the best way to achieve your goals is to start with a plan.

We have developed a careful PROCESS to help us achieve these 3 goals:

  • We start with RESEARCH. We get to know you, your needs, desires and aspirations. We get to know your land, its opportunities, challenges and surroundings.
  • Next we study PRECEDENTS [successful stuff that has been done before] conducting case studies of similar, successful projects. We focus on why they work and ideas we can use to make your project a success.
  • Next we BRAINSTORM [come up with a bunch of ideas, some of which are good, some great.] We surround ourselves with the information we have collected and spend some time doing nothing but coming up with ideas.
  • Following the brainstorming session, we FOCUS. We evaluate the ideas developed based on our research and precedent study. We then select the ideas that will achieve your goals.
  • We then COMMUNICATE the ideas to you. Focusing on images, we collect as many as possible to express our ideas to you. We present them to you in a manner that allows you to surround yourself in them, so that you can live with them for some time. Usually that means we create a number of boards covered with images [organized by idea] so you can put them in a comfortable place and absorb them over a period of time.
  • We then work with you to SELECT the BIG IDEA that will fulfill your STRATEGY and create the EXPERIENCE to which you aspire.

Brent Thompson is expert in destination design: the master planning and architectural design of public places, including retail, resort, entertainment and town center destinations. Thompson has over twenty-five years of experience in architecture, concept design, master planning and urban design for a wide range of domestic and international clients, including every major entertainment company, with a rich portfolio of projects in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and North America. Thompson’s history is unique among architects. He was educated traditionally as an architect and planner, a course he followed in his first ten years of practice. He further had opportunity to live and work in Prague, where he was a founding partner of Architects’ Atelier Praha and refined his theoretical approach to architectural design. Upon his return to the United States two years later, he began a five year parenthesis, designing entertainment venues for most of Hollywood’s major studios. Entertainers are students of human psychology, and expert at the idioms of story telling and metaphors. Hollywood is extremely pragmatic in its approach, and places great emphasis on the “guest experience,” and Thompson emerged from that time a unique designer. Though now running a more traditional architecture and planning practice, he has learned to combine design theory with entertainment based pragmatism. His projects are media rich, multi-layered, metaphorical, expressive and culturally relevant. Perhaps more important, they work. He has throughout his varied career been involved in the pragmatic study of the way people use spaces, and the knowledge gained is the basis for each of his designs. He has further learned how to hear the vision of clients and to translate their vision into reality.
